Calabria used to be the cradle for a modernity to come. In 2015 we can still feel the ancient Greek history through the use of the name MAGNA GRAECIA which means the Great Greece in latin. In these times of economic recession and political regression all over Europe we decided to meet the people living in the far south border of Europe, facing Africa Middle East and Asia.
This film depicts a series of conversations taking place between people living in Calabria. The main subject of the film is the reality of social regression in the European democratic area. Since the crisis started to change the social perspectives in Europe, we see many of our important values deprived of their power. This film is motivated by the ability of the people to fight against short term political actions and ideas, to fight against populists ideas based on hathred and sellfishness. This film gives the people a space for talking out of the TV standards.
Each person in this film appears in the way he wished to express himself, even if he decided to make sometrhing instead of talking.
The film is divided in 5 parts. The first one is dedicated to violence on WOMEN. The second one is dedicated to a teacher in the Sibari area, CLAUDIO DIONESALVI, teaching about natural rights. The third one is presenting a group of Pakistani MIGRANTS organizing themselves to face the reality of Italian administration processes. The fourth one is the narration, by the former mayor of Rosarno, GIUSEPPE LAVORATO, of the ROSARNO shooting in 2010 against black skin workers. PEPPINO LAVORATO who was leading a progressist political project, defending intelligence and positive ideas to face the needs of new comers and fight against the fear spred by local mobs. In this part appears also DOMENICO LUCANO, mayor of the small town of RIACE. The fifth conversation is led by the famous anti mafia prosecutor NICOLA GRATTERI in his office in Reggio Calabria.
